After a good training, a therapist, who is already working with bio-natural treatments, may add this technique to the different massage kinds he is giving either in a Wellness Center or in his/her free-lance activity.
Attendees will learn the correct place of points, the different techniques to stimulate marma points, the vital points treatment for diseases such as rhinitis, menstrual disorders, back pain, headaches, digestive and visual problems.

Marma, the body vital points, where consciousness meets the matter
The key principle of Ayurveda is balancing body rhythms with nature ones, in order to ensure a good health condition and to prevent sickness. A way to create this balance consists in massaging the marma points through the so-called "marmabhyangam".
The marma points treatment acts on the body/mind/soul system, going beyond the physical dimension, up to a deeper level in the body, the level where the actual healing occurs. Marma is a Sanskrit term meaning hidden or secret. Sushruta, the father of surgery, in his Sushruta Samhita, belonging to about 5000 years ago, defines marma as the points where two or more kinds of tissues meet: muscles, blood vessels, ligaments, bones, joints. These points are the main seat of vital force, Prana, pervading every part of the body. They can also be described as the connection of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, the body constituents or the points where Sattva, Rajas and Tamas meet, the nature and mind qualities. These points can be used either to heal or to damage. While a medical doctor or a therapist use these points to promote health, a warrior may use the same points to hurt an enemy. In Sharira Sthana, the VI chapter of Sushruta Samhita, the 107 marma points, present in the body, are mentioned in detail. Their relatively small number makes them easier to remember and makes the work easier, if compared with the work coming from the one thousand points considered by Chinese Acupuncture. Ayurveda divides marma points into major and minor. The major points correspond to the seven chakra, while the minor ones are spread all over the body.
As in acupuncture, in order to identify points place and dimensions a measurement unit (anguli) is used, corresponding to a human finger thickness. Many marma points are larger than those used in acupuncture and this makes easier their localization. Marma points affect chakra, physical health, dosha, mind qualities. They also affect the spiritual level as they can be considered as the junction point between eternity and relativity, between consciousness and matter. Marmabhyanga helps developing health and longevity of body and mind, ensures the normal flow and balance of hormones, fluids, immune factors. In general, the marma points massage objective is stimulating organs and body systems. Marma massage gives the following main benefits:

  • Improving nervous system function
  • Promoting body nourishment
  • Promoting a good sleep quality
  • Increasing/keeping health stability

A marma massage session, following a general massage, on all the body, lasts 60-90 minutes. During this time, the therapist stimulates the all 107 points or focusses his/her attention on a group of marma points, according to the individual needs.
Points are stimulated with one or more fingers, according to the point dimension. Beginning with a soft touch, pressure is increased gradually until it is pleasing to those who receive the massage. The movement can be circular, both clockwise and counter clockwise, or it can be linear, with rubbing of marma area. In this way, the therapist stimulates energies and removes all the possible obstacles to the flow. The receiver may experience a deep relaxation and a sense of toning, at the same time.
