Panchakarma Therapy

Panchakarma (five actions) is a program for cleansing, balancing, healing and rejuvenation of body, mind and consciousness.

Panchakarma (five actions) is a program for cleansing, balancing, healing and rejuvenation of body, mind and consciousness. Panchakarma will remove the excess doshas and correct imbalances in them as well as eliminate the harmful ama out of the system through the body’s own organs and channels of elimination. Panchakarma purifies the tissues at a very deep level, it involves daily massages and oil baths, herbal enemas, nasal administrations. Ayurveda recommends Panchakarma as a seasonal treatment for maintaining mental and physical hygiene and balance. Like all medical procedures, panchakarma therapy always must begin with an initial consultation by a qualified ayurvedic physician who can determine the individual’s prakriti (constitutional type), the nature of the health problem, if any, and the appropriate degree of intensity of the prescribed therapies.
The program of panchakarma traditionally is given in three stages:

  • Poorva Karma - Preparatory procedures that include oleation therapy (snehana) and fomentation therapy (swedana).
  • Pradhan Karma - Consists of the five essential purificatory therapies, namely:
    • Vamana (emesis)
    • Virechana (purgation)
    • Basti (enema)
    • Nasya (nasal treatment)
    • Rakta mokshana (blood letting
  • Paschat Karma - Follow-up therapies that include diet, medication & lifestyle.
